Hi all,
Don't say a bad word about Cyberwar. It's the greatest game ever!!! Me
and two friends (with old gusses and a Gus Max) installed and play the
game with Midi. All you have to do is choose the Gus card and voila.
Maybe you can tell us your settings of the GUS and machine config?

I had the same problem. The cursor didn't work the first time Windows
comes up.
I solved it by changing the GUS IRQ from 5 to 11.

More experiments during this WE showed that Cubase does load the patches,
each time the window is activated (i.e. it comes to the front).
But it loads only patches 1 to 36 in hi-fi mode, and 1 to 63 in
save-mem mode, regardless to the patches actually used in the song!

The SB FM emulation is not supported, is what the documentation says. The SB

A standard GUS won't record in 16-bits. Full stop (period for you US Gussers).
The only way to record at 16bits is to rip stuff off of CD's using a program
like CDtools, but that doesn't use the GUS anyway.

Subject: Another Windows sound problem..
Well, I can't seem to get any sound from my gus in Windows.. No matter
what version of the drivers I install, the result is always a locking up
of my system when I try to set the UltraWave driver up.. Literally, I
click on the Wave driver in the preferences menu (in the control panel)
and the system loads a bit and then freezes.. I am thinking it's not a
problem with the drivers, but something funny in my Windows envoirment...
Could someone who has the GUS working fine in windows mail me a copy of
their WIN.INI, and SYSTEM.INI so I can see if something in there is out of
the ordinary in comparision with mine?
System specs:
486 DX-2/66, 8MB RAM, Trident 9400CXi VLB video, WDC2540 and QLPS52 hard
drives.. and an old revision GUS..
NOTE: These drivers USED to work fine... but for some reason, they don't
want to now..

PCI GUS...
Won't happen without legacy headers. PCI cards only use 1 interrupt
per card and its defined by the slot its in. Since the GUS needs 2
IRQ's in present form, you'd have to use the ISA bus to get the extra
IRQ. Don't know about PCI and DMA's.
SCIS or EIDE CD-ROM's...
If you've got SCSI, go with it. EIDE works fine, but SCSI is always
better for multiple disk systems. Shouldn't matter about the GUS as
long as your controller doesn't conflict with it.
TV and GUS...
Easy solution. If it doesn't support the hardware/software you want,
either bug the hell out of them, or don't buy their software, take
your money elsewhere. And yes, it should support the GUS, but hey,
they ain't getting my money until it does.

I downloaded the demo of TV and it's pretty cool. I got it to work using
sbos without any options. My problem is that after about five minutes the
game hangs, it may be the GUS or my computer. I have a 486dx4-100, 8meg,
Advance logic PCI graphics card. I also use the joystick port on my IO card,
could this be causing it?

Maybe you should do the math. Take 16 times 44k. That's only 760k/S or
0.742MB/S. Even if you take the GUS all out and use 32 channels @44k that's
still only 1408k/S or just a measly 1.38MB/s. Medium fast IDE hard drives
get like 3 -5MB/S throughput. The BUS wouldn't feel a thing. Especially if
it was PCI. PCI can burst at 256MB/s.

>

For those who might be new to the GUS updates, always check epas first or
Gravis BBS since this many time answers the question what drivers are current.
I noticed that 3.59 was re-uploaded to epas submit recently, I suppose someone
requested it who didn't get it earlier ( I was originally posted sometime in
Jan 95 I think), I also noted that release 4.11 has been posted on epas. It
was readily apparant to me from the .txt file if this was for MAX only, so I
got it and found out it is for all GUS boards, including MAX, etc as listed in
the .txt file. Anyway the drivers installed beautifully from Win95 DOS (hit F8
and select command prompt only), and they sound great too.
But back to the original question, about whether Megaem in 3.59 is the new
Protected mode Megaem. No, and it's not included with 4.11 either. You'll
have to download megaem303.zip from epas. I just looked and it's still there.
MEGA-EM VERSION 3.03b (BETA) - 03/17/95
As to the rumours of soundblaster emulation in Mega-em303, heres some text from
epas mega303b.txt file:
VERSION 3.03b (Beta)
* First release of the all-new, rewritten Mega-Em. Emulates Roland
Sound Canvas/General MIDI/MT-32, Sound Blaster and UltraMID. Improvements
over older (2.xx) versions of Mega-Em include compatibility with most
protected mode software, interactive setup, single executable, better
sounding patch set, faster loading time, allows UltraSound software to
run at the same time as Mega-Em, automatic reloading of patch set when
necessary, automatically unloads when Windows is run and automatically
takes advantage of extra hardware (the 16 bit record/playback CODEC) on
the UltraSound MAX. Sound Blaster music (FM) support is not included.
Note- FM support is NOT included, believe it! It still provides SB DAC support
mono, just like it always has.

Subject: Everyone with MK2 problems
1) For those if you who expereince slowdowns when playing MK2 with a GUS,
let me say that is NOT because of the GUS. MK2 slows down just as much
when using a the SCC-1 & SB combo. If your system is less than a 486/66,
it will slow down when playing music. (read #5 to get mk2 to run faster)
2) You need at least 5 megabytes free for MK2 to run w/o accessing the
HDD for the digital samples. If you only have 4, i suggest you use load
a disk cache of about 256k. Or turn the sound effects off.
3) Do NOT use QEMM or EMM386 for MK2. It doesn't need it. In fact, you
shouldn't use these memory managers for *ANY* game that uses DOS4GW. You
should use only use Himem.sys Everyone should know this by now.
4) Make sure you have at least 530k free of conventional memory. It will
run extrordinary slow if you don't. If you have a disk compression
software running (Stacker,Doublspace), and use a GUS with MK2, you'll have
less than 500k free. Solution: remove the disk compression software.
5) ** TO MAKE MK2 RUN FASTER **
For some reason, some stages run faster than others. The fastest running
stage by far the The Pit 2. You can enter a code to let you play on that
stage all the time. Here it is: when the programming credits appear
when you start the game, type "AICULEDSSUL". You should hear a chime if
you did it correctly. Then you can press F9 to enter the cheaters' menu
and select "Cheat on" and "Stage to Pit 2" Hope that helps...

Subject: GUS and InVision videoconferencing apps
>From the "Thought you might like to know" department:
I just returned from a video conferencing demonstration and seminar, and one
of the vendors represented was InVision. Their product is a software
solution to LAN-based packet video that runs under MS Windows. The idea is
that their software will work with off-the-shelf video and audio components
that meet the requirements their system specifies. One of those
requirements is full-duplex audio. They support two vendors right now:
Advanced Gravis, and VocalTec. The reason, obviously, is that their
low-cost entry level system wants to support low-cost audio boards that can
record and playback simultaneously. The Sound Blaster doesn't cut it.
They'll add support for more audio and video capture boards in future
releases.
Creative Labs also showed their offering, based on a Video Blaster and SB
audio. It doesn't do full-duplex audio. You can interrupt someone, but
when you speak, you can't hear them, and vice versa. But theirs works over
regular voice lines, using a synchronous modem supplied with the kit, which
is actually a pretty neat trick.

I've been using a Toshiba 3501B Quad Speed SCSI-2 CD-ROM and a cheap Adaptec
ISA bus SCSI adapter with my gus max for about 6 months now with no
problems. Just remember to run the audio cable from your CD-ROM to one of
the CD-Audio sockets on the Ultrasound. It might also be wise to close the
'DISABLE CD-ROM' jumper on the Ultrasound card. Also, I highly recomemend
ANY Toshiba CD-ROM drive.
One more thing: I paid 16 bucks for a 256-16 70 nanosecond SOJ DRAM chip
here at the Chip Merchant in San Diego. Someone was asking if 50 bucks was a
good price to upgrade their gus max to 1 meg. No, that is not a good price.

The music really sucks :), having to play it in MONO may have something
to do with that though.
I also get consistent lockups with this game. I'm using a DX/2-66 with 4
megs. The game will completely freeze. No audio, video will be frozen.
When I press my num lock key, the sound starts back up again... which is
rather strange. Not sure what the problem is. Went through the
suggestions in the doc file.
I've put it off until they get native GUS support (no SBOS) and I can
actually play without lockups.

My mouse keeps getting hosed when I run windows. I have to do a complete
power down to get the mouse to come back up. A soft boot still comes up
with the mouse being unavailable. (the driver won't even load) It doesn't
happen all the time. More than 50% of the time though.
Never noticed anything about a cursor problem.

Subject: Terminal Velocity: Blame Gravis
The fact that Terminal Velocity does not support the GUS is
not the fault of 3D Realms and Apogee. The game uses a digital
mixing technique and uses the standard Digpak driver. Gravis
wrote the GUS Digpak driver to work in conjunction with Ultramid.
Games such as Return to Zork and US Navy Fighter use these drivers
and all work with the GUS in "native" mode. 3DRealms uses version 3.4
of the Digpak driver, while the Gravis driver is only version 3.2. Thus
this is why TV does not support the GUS. BY copying the GUS Digpak
driver to the TV directory and by running Ultramid, the TV installation
program will recognize the GUS and allow it to be chosen as an option.
Furthermore, the test sound option in the installation program also
works with the GUS and sound can be heared. However, when TV is run
using the 3.2 drivers, the game hangs before startup.
I have emailed Gravis about an update to these drivers but have not
yet sent a response.

Subject: GUS 2.4 and CD-ROM
I've read the FAQ and found nothing useful so I turn to here. I'm trying
to connect my CD-Rom to my Revision 2.4 Ultrasound. I know that the
pin-outs go l-g-g-r, but can't manage to get any sound going. Am I
correct to assume that the pins should go on JP7 (labelled CD on the
card)? Am I doing something wrong? I've tried every combination.
